Cloth Comparison

DCover.jpg      Dandelion-hor_500.jpg   PREFOLDS

Out of all the cloth varieties available prefolds are definitely the most economical and versatile.  They can also be just a touch cumbersome the first time you try them but you well get used to them quickly and before you know it you will become accustomed to it.  We love them!

DCover.jpg     110.jpg   CONTOURS

Contours are simply a step up from pre-folds.  They are hourglass shaped diapers. Some are available with elastic in the legs or back. They may be held together with a SNAPPI® Diaper Fastener, pins, or a diaper cover. These diapers are absorbent, but are not waterproof, so a cover will be needed to be purchased as well.
PROSCONS
  • Less expensive than fitted diapers
  • Faster drying
  • Trimmer appearance overall
  • If double gussets are available on contour, they give extra protection around the legs when paired with a cover
  • You'll need to cover the contour with a waterproof diaper cover

We like to think of fitted diapers as the option in the middle out of all the options available.  They have some of the benefits inherent with pockets and all-in-ones at a lower cost and are better than prefolds and contours when it comes to containing messes.  They contain messes better due to the elastic at the legs and back and snug fit with snaps or velcro.  This feature will prevent your covers from getting dirty as often leaving them ready for resuse.  Fitted diapers are fastened via snaps or velcro.

PROSCONS
  • Has elastic at legs and waist holds everything inside, even runny stuff - when paired with a cover, extra protection around the legs
  • Because of better containment, you need fewer covers
  • Attached closures keep it secure
  • Convenient and easy to use (no folding)
  • Can be loosely snapped and used as a pull-on diaper for potty-training toddlers
  • Aborbent (Ideal for nighttime)
  • More expensive than contours
  • Requires a diaper co

       dw-mason.jpg   DIAPER COVER

A diaper cover provides a waterproof layer over the cloth diaper to keep your child's clothing dry.  A Diaper cover should be used with fitted or contour diaper or prefolds.

If you purchase prefolds, you may want to also purchase a Snappi to make a diaper cover effective. A diaper cover that closes with velcro style fasteners will eliminate the need for pins/fasteners when using foldable (prefold/flat) diapers.

How many covers do I need?
We recommend purchasing 6-8 diaper covers for a newborn, 4-6 diaper covers for an older baby and 2-3 diaper covers for a toddler.

One size diapers are exactly as they sound.  They are meant to fit a child from birth until about potty training (or 30-35 pounds).

This style diaper typically has a row of snaps on the front of the diaper.  This allows the diaper to be folded over to create a smaller size.  As the baby gets bigger, the snap settings allow the diaper to get bigger around the waist and leg area.  Most brands have a one-size diaper option.

        easytoremoveinsert-46677.png   POCKET DIAPERS

Pocket diapers, much like All-In-Ones, are as easy to use as disposables!  They consist of a waterproof outer layer (cover) sewn to an internal layer of fleece. An absorbent insert is stuffed between these two layers. When your baby pees, the moisture travels through the fleece and is absorbed by the insert, leaving only the dry fleece touching your baby's skin; hence, keeping your baby's behind dry and free of rash.

Much like the All-In-Ones the convenience offered by pocket diapers come at a premium so it's not practical to use them exclusively; however, you might want to have a few for when you're away from the house and convenience is paramount.  They're perfect for daycare and/or babysitters or anyone you think could benefit from the simplicity of these diapers.  One of the most popular pocket diapers is the bumGenius one-size which are good from approx. 12 lbs through potty training.

PROSCONS
  • Has elastic at legs and waist holds well
  • Parents can adjust the absorbency by selecting different inserts, and depending on what inserts are used, the diaper may be very trim.
  • They are very easy to change.
  • The synthetic inner liner often made from thin fleece or suede cloth, wicks moisture away and keeps the bottom dry
  • Pocket diapers tend to be sensitive to detergent build up which can temporarily decrease the effectiveness of waterproof barrier.
  • The inner layer cannot be reused throughout the day after it is soiled the pocket diaper must be replaced and a new diaper must be used.
  • When potty training, the synthetic stay-dry inner may prevent the child from learning to use the potty since he cannot sense when he/she is wet.

All-In-One diapers are basically the ones resembling traditional disposables, except that they're better. It's what they say - All-In-One.These diapers are basically ready to go.  You don't need to put inserts in them or use prefolds or anything like that.  They are very similar to pocket diapers except for the absorbent part of the diaper which either snaps in or is pre-sewn to the inside of the waterproof outer cover.

Unfortunately convenience like this comes at a higher price than the other options.  However, they do have their place and we do recommend you have a few for when you are not at the house and convenience is paramount.  They're perfect for daycare and/or babysitters or anyone you think could benefit from the simplicity of these diapers.

PROSCONS
  • Convenient
  • Very similar to disposables
  • Easy to use, one step cloth diaper
  • May be more expensive
  • May take longer to dry because of the attached soaker
         picture-9.png   HYBRID DIAPERS (AI2 - All-In-Two)

Hybrid diapers combine the convenience of disposable diapers with some of the re-usable nature of cloth diapers.  Generally, hybrid diapers consist of a cloth cover and an inner disposable liner.  The inner liners in hybrid diapers can be thrown away, or sometimes they can be flushed in a toilet or composted for use in the garden.

They are designed for you to be able to buy 6-8 covers and enough inserts in different varieties to make the most convenient and cost effective system for you and your baby.

PROSCO
  • Can use a flushable or disposable liner and reuse the cover
  • Very similar to traditional disposable diapers
  • Liners typically contain a small amount absorbant gel similar to disposables
  • Some liners require more handling to flush properly or may clog t
